Develop Your Work and Aesthetic Philosophy at New York Studio School
Forge a lifelong art practice with NYSS’s unique MFA and Certificate programs. The priority application deadline for financial aid is February 15.
Join a community of dedicated artists for full-time study in drawing, painting, and sculpture. The New York Studio School was founded in 1964 with an emphasis on artists learning from artists, working from perception in extensive studio sessions, and the pursuit of drawing as the most direct means of describing one’s ideas or experiences. At NYSS, students cultivate distinctive visual languages and develop personal studio practices that last a lifetime.
MFA
The 60-credit, two-year MFA curriculum immerses aspiring artists to awaken imagination, technical expertise, and dedication to art. Semesters start with a two-week intensive Marathon, taught by NYSS and guest faculty, which ignites new ideas and generates momentum for the semester. The first year prioritizes a range of studio classes, shifting focus to personal vision development during the second year. Classes are bolstered by the Evening Lecture Series, technical workshops, one-on-one faculty guidance, group critiques, visiting artists, and faculty-guided trips. The weekly Critical Studies seminar explores theoretical approaches to artmaking and culminates in a written thesis paper and Thesis Exhibition. Led by internationally distinguished artists and dedicated teachers, the School’s experiential pedagogy encourages students to work hard and establish ethical and philosophical frameworks for their life’s work.

Certificate
The three-year NYSS Certificate Program is an exceptional opportunity to deepen one’s vocation as an artist, either in person or virtually. Each semester begins with the School’s signature two-week Marathon, followed by twelve weeks of coursework and independent studio work, bolstered by the Evening Lecture Series and weekly seminar, professional practice and technical workshops, one-on-one faculty guidance, group critiques, exhibition opportunities, visiting artists, and faculty-guided trips. Artists can begin in either the fall or spring semester and have the flexibility to participate in-person or virtually on a semester-by-semester basis. The curriculum immerses students in a deep studio practice, guided by faculty and supported by a wide range of classes rooted in perceptual study. The three-year program culminates in the Certificate Completion Exhibition. The Virtual Certificate allows for artists all around the world to deepen and expand their knowledge, craft, and concept inside their existing studio space. Combining the studio-centric emphasis of the School’s teaching methods with a personal, real-time approach to online learning, the virtual program is designed for practicing and aspiring artists who seek to cultivate the studio skills and methods that will prepare them for a lifetime of art-making.
