Documenta Appoints New Curatorial Team Members
Less than eight months away from the 16th edition of Documenta, the German contemporary arts festival has appointed four new curatorial team members: artist and musician Raven Chacon will serve as curator-at-Large, and Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus, and Noam Segal will be curatorial advisors.
The upcoming iteration, opening on June 12 in Kassel, promises to offer a space for “study, experimentation, and awakening, where artists hold right to expression alongside their artistic creation.” But artists and free speech advocates have argued that this stated mission jars with Documenta’s adoption of a controversial definition of antisemitism that includes criticism of Israel, raising serious questions about creative freedom. In a recent interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, Artistic Director Naomi Beckwith revealed that some artists have already declined to participate in Documenta 16 over Germany's support of Israel's genocide in Gaza.
Chacon, Bonsu, Junghaus, and Segal will join Beckwith and the core curatorial team for the 16th edition — Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro, and Xiaoyu Weng — to help shape the program's artistic vision.
