Must-See May Shows in NYC
Venice is great, but we’ve got amazing art at home. Plus, a celebration of NY’s first Arabic-speaking community, Duchamp, Édouard Glissant, and more.
Pssst. Over here. Sure, everyone in the art world (including half our office) seems to be in or headed to Venice, but we're still the center of the art world, okay!? To that point, there's a ton of fantastic art to be seen around the city right now, including the most robust mainland showing in decades of Metcalf Chateau, a group of Japanese-Hawaiian artists. Check out our May guide for the full list.
This week in New York, it's a tale of two cities. There's the story of the glitz, glam, and excess, as seen on the red carpet of the Met Gala last night, themed "Costume Art" around the exhibition opening this weekend. And there's the other side, of those rising up against runaway wealth inequality, as seen in rollicking protests and boycott messages. Guess which tale we choose to tell?

From Our Critics

Hakim Bishara
Marcel Duchamp at the Museum of Modern Art
"I noticed myself longing for those simpler times when “eliminating the artist’s hand” from art-making — what some have called “deskilling” or “de-arting” — was supposed to provide a pathway back to the true self."
John Yau
For a Museum of Errantry with Édouard Glissant at the Center for Art, Research and Alliances
"Their art is politically engaged and opaque, rather than didactic and self-righteous. There is no collection like this in America, and we are the poorer for it."
Julie Schneider
Made in America: The Industrial Photography of Christopher Payne at Cooper Hewitt
"Payne’s stills capture rhythm and repetition, action and drama, the scenes he plucks from these whirring industrial settings encapsulating each process."
