Everyone else else, want to hear my favorite Reggie Wilson anecdote, about the first time I interviewed said Reggie Wilson, a Brooklyn-based choreographer who has spent the last 20-plus years building structurally sophisticated, culturally resonant works?
(sure you do. We sat down at this little Austrian [really. it’s now closed.] restaurant in Brooklyn. I was doing the interview prep stuff, taking out the notebook, setting up the recorder, etc., and he said, “Before we start I just have to say, I hate words.” and I said ” … ” and he said, “Well, look, what if every time you wrote something, I had to do an interpretive dance in order for people to understand it?” And I said ” … ” And then he gave one of those fabulously nasty little smiles of his, and proceeded to say very smart things for the next hour or so, while I scrambled to keep up. The man is good with words. He’s better with dance. Go.)
Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group’s theRevisitation concludes tonight, Saturday, March 17 at New York Live Arts (219 West 19th Street, Chelsea, Manhattan)
