VOTE!

An interview with artist and Congressional hopeful Claire Valdez, Kim Dacres’s rubber art, and Christopher Myers’s kaleidoscopic subway mosaics.

Did you know there’s a Democratic primary today? If you happen to live in New York’s 7th Congressional District — Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Long Island City, Ridgewood, Maspeth, and more — then you have an extra reason to go out and vote: There's an artist in the race.

Claire Valdez is a current New York State Assembly member, union organizer, Democratic Socialist, and painter who calls for abolishing ICE, taxing the rich, and Medicare for all, among other progressive causes. I got to meet her at Sinkhole gallery in Ridgewood for a conversation about her struggles as an artist in NYC and her ambitious plans for DC, if she makes it there. Two artists who listened in on the interview told her that she won their votes. Will she win yours, too?
