Editor’s Note: This event is part of the 2021/22 Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators, following three posts by the Fellow, the third of which is an email-only exhibition that was sent to all Hyperallergic newsletter subscribers.
On Tuesday, February 1, at 7pm (EST), join us for a special event with cultural organizer and curator La Tanya S. Autry as she discusses her curatorial project Beholding, Black World Making and her Hyperallergic email exhibition, which features behind-the-scenes reflections on the project’s development alongside work by artist Sheila Pree Bright.
The conversation will explore Black people’s modes of defying ongoing precarity while loving one another, focusing in particular on artist images and information, activism and organizing, and scholarship rooted in Black liberation and anti-colonial pedagogies.

Cultural organizer La Tanya S. Autry, recipient of ArtTable’s 2021 New Leadership Award, exercises her laboratory curatorial praxis through developing exhibitions and programming in institutional spaces, such as Yale University Art Gallery, moCa Cleveland, and Artspace New Haven as well as in various non-institutional collaborative freedom projects, including the Black Liberation Center, the Social Justice & Museums Resource List, The Art of Black Dissent, and #MuseumsAreNotNeutral. She is completing her PhD in art history at the University of Delaware. Her dissertation, The Crossroads of Commemoration: Lynching Landscapes in America, examines the interplay of race, representation, memory, and public space.
