WASHINGTON, DC — South of Memorial Circle, within eyeshot of the Lincoln Memorial and John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame, more than 50 protesters gathered yesterday, November 5, to oppose Trump’s proposed 250-foot Triumphal Arch ahead of the National Capital Planning Commission’s (NCPC) final meeting to vote on the project.

Hours after the NCPC approved the arch in an 8–4 vote, a district court judge granted the District of Columbia and Virginia a 14-day restraining order to halt construction.

At the event organized by Third Act DC, an environmental and pro-democracy action group for area residents aged 60 and up, two Virginia Congressional representatives, an Arlington County Board member, and Greg Werkheiser, an attorney with Cultural Heritage Partners, spoke about how the arch would infringe on the architectural and spiritual purpose of the space. He was one of two people associated with lawsuits that the District of Columbia and Virginia, the Arlington County Board, as well as Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian filed against the National Park Service and Department of the Interior in opposition to the arch.
