Nordic Impressions: Contemporary Art from Åland, Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, photo by Eileen Travell/ASF

Nordic Impressions: Contemporary Art from Åland, Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, brings together a wide array of artistic expressions—paintings, drawings, photographs, installations, films, and videos—that reflect the global character of Nordic art. Showcasing 24 artists from throughout the Nordic region, the exhibition explores themes that hold an important place in Nordic culture, ranging from historic subjects such as light and darkness, the coalescence of nature and folklore, women’s rights and social liberalism; and more current subjects such as climate change, sustainability, and immigration.

Included in the show are installations from two of this year’s representatives in the Venice Biennale: Iceland’s Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir (a.k.a. Shoplifter), whose organic sculptures of artificial hair dyed in hypernatural colors explore vanity, beauty, and mythology; and Finnish-Sámi artist Outi Pieski, whose Crossing Paths incorporates traditional Sámi shawl-making in a large undulating sculpture. Other artists exploring tradition and mythology include Britta Marakatt-Labba, winner of this year’s Stig Dagerman prize for her textile works of Sámi culture and history; painter Mamma Andersson; and video artists Marthe Thorshaug and Tori Wrånes.

The exhibition also explores landscapes and culture through works by Ólafur Elíasson, Eggert Pétursson, Anneè Olofsson, Nathalie Djurberg, Danish artist collaborative SUPERFLEX, and Pia Arke’s Arctic Hysteria, known for its impact on conversations about Denmark’s colonial history in Greenland; and identity and relationships, in videos by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Ragnar Kjartansson, and Jesper Just; paintings by Tal R and Per Kirkeby; drawings by Katrín Sigurdardóttir; and photography by Torbjørn Rødland. Curated by Klaus Ottmann, the exhibition is organized in collaboration with The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.

Nordic Impressions is on view through June 8 at Scandinavia House (58 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016). Upcoming gallery tours of the exhibition take place on April 24, May 8, May 22, and June 5.
